Keep your air clean, your HVAC system running smoothly, and your energy bills low with this simple air filter replacement guide!

Why Replacing Your Air Filter Matters

As an HVAC contractor in the Greater Houston area, we know how important it is to keep your system running efficiently, especially in Texas’s warm climate. One of the easiest ways to do that? Regularly replacing your HVAC system's air filter! Not only does a clean filter improve the air quality in your home, but it also extends the life of your HVAC unit and keeps your energy bills down.

When to Replace Your Air Filter

Ideally, you should check your air filter once a month and replace it every 1-3 months, depending on factors like:

  • Type of Filter: Some high-efficiency filters last up to three months.

  • Household Conditions: If you have pets, allergies, or live in an area with a lot of dust, more frequent replacements may be necessary.

  • Seasonal Changes: During peak usage times, such as summer and winter, you may need to replace the filter more frequently.

Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Your HVAC Air Filter

  1. Turn Off Your HVAC System Before you begin, ensure your HVAC system is completely turned off to avoid circulating dust or debris while changing the filter.

  2. Locate the Air Filter Compartment Most HVAC systems have a filter located either in the return air duct or near the air handler unit. If you’re not sure where yours is, check your system’s user manual.

  3. Determine the Filter Size Check the current filter for its dimensions, which are usually listed on the filter frame. Standard sizes are common, but it’s essential to match the size exactly for proper filtration.

  4. Remove the Old Filter Carefully slide the old filter out of its compartment. If it’s been in there for a while, it may have collected a significant amount of dust and debris, so handle it gently to avoid scattering dust.

  5. Insert the New Filter Before you insert the new filter, check the arrows on the filter frame for the direction of airflow. Slide the filter in with the arrows pointing toward the blower motor.

  6. Turn the HVAC System Back On Once your new filter is securely in place, turn your HVAC system back on and enjoy cleaner, healthier air!
